The return of the choker
There is an infinite number of accessories out there to accompany our different fashion styles; a number that is only matched by the different forms and materials these accessories can take. This season we’re particularly surprised by one accessory above all: the choker. As Patricia Sañes of Cool Hunter Diary tells us, this piece of jewelry comes “in the form of a chain, in metal, velvet and silk, featuring everything from jewel incrustations to grunge-style appliqués…” It is also proving to be a popular bridal accessory. According to the well-known blogger, “chokers wholeheartedly play with the idea that ‘anything goes’, with a single aim in mind: taking over our wardrobe, in all their many variations.” But what exactly is the origin of this accessory? We need to go all the way back to the French Revolution, when many women wore red ribbons around their necks in remembrance of all those who had died under the guillotine. Conversely, at the end of 1890s, wearing pearl or diamond chokers was a symbol of wealth, luxury and the elite.
It wasn’t until 1944 that the fashion trend was revived after a 40-year hiatus; the choker was featured in an article in the renowned Life magazine, under the guise of the “dog collar”. They reappeared again in the 1990s in less glamourous materials, boasting myriad colours and often coming in the form of tattoos. Chokers were all the rage again. “From classrooms to the catwalks of Dior, Chanel and Saint Laurent. there is nowhere that chokers aren’t to be found. They have reinvented themselves like no other accessory, as part of a flawless attempt to confirm their supremacy,” Patricia Sañes adds. And, of course, the trendiest brides have also succumb to the charm of the choker. The Barcelona label Jesús Peiró cannot get enough of them; its 2017 collection features only the most delicate styles, boasting precious stones, embroidery and large tulle bows, as well as elegant white silk ribbon that varies from fine and slender to wide and bold. The choices out there are endless, and brides are falling for them all.
Sequins and beers
My friends don’t know it – well, perhaps a couple of them could guess – but I carefully style my look every time we meet for our weekly suppers. I’m talking about those casual dinners with edamame and salmon nigiri, the ones that you arrive at exhausted from a ten-hour photo shoot or an afternoon of ceaseless writing. After the avalanche of emails that we all crawl out from under every day, we collapse onto the bench of our regular table, ordering a beer, “ice cold, please”, between laughter and ironic remarks. I suppose that by this point in the day it barely, if at all, matters what we are wearing. Yet, while I agree with this, I am simply unable to comply. After abandoning my Mac, I always have to drop by my place and ‘tidy myself up’. I refuse to let the world see me with my weary post-office look.
I hastily open my wardrobe door (this time, I’m not going to be late!). My dungarees have already seen their fair share of glory. I flick through the hangers. Dresses? I’m less inclined towards them, ever since I abused the baby doll look during my teens. Yep, in the end I always opt for a pair of jeans. This season they are all high waisted (I love the 90s Beverly Hills, 90210 look) with asymmetric, frayed cuffs; we aren’t just talking any old jeans. Okay, so far, so good. But I want to pair them with an original, timeless piece; something that suggests couture, that surprises my friends and, why not, that also turns a few heads as I pass by. Discretion has never been my strong point.
I hasten to open the other side of my wardrobe, where I keep the real gems, the ones that only make an appearance for parties and other special occasions. Today, I feel like breaking with the norms. How? The multicoloured sequined jacket by Jesús Peiró gives me the answer I’m looking for. Until I decided to buy it, I had only seen this Merche Segarra design on the shoulders of dizzyingly nervous brides. But today I enthusiastically slip it on, eager to take it out of context. My allies? A pair of 90s-style jeans and some studded leather boots.
After all, I like to break the rules and unleash my imagination. A bridal catalogue sold me the same jacket that today, your average Wednesday, I’m enjoying on a night of beers and sequins. A pairing that is as bewildering as it is illuminating.
All of a sudden your body doesn’t know if it should run in the opposite direction, overwhelmed by the insistence and the nerve of that live wire who arrived in Formentera to stay for good two years ago.
He isn’t interested in books and isn’t the 9 to 5 office type either. He says he feels free writing at dawn and driving his quad full pelt all over the island. He doesn’t care about money, as long as he has enough to live on without needing to have a bank account and wear a tie.
Our company´s commitment to manufacture in Spain has been rewarded with the awarding of the Spanish Origin Certificate seal. This was achieved by passing the audit process led by an external specialist in product certification. Today we announce with pride that we are the first company in the bridal sector that can use the “made in Spain” mark on our dresses.
Since 1988, we have been working constantly for the highest quality standards in everything we do. Merche Segarra, our Creative Director, has overall responsibility for the process involved in the making of a Jesús Peiró dress, each one from start to finish is entirely hand made.
Everyday, the Jesús Peiró team works with a clear philosophy: demand quality, elegance and set new trends in bridal fashion; every stage entirely made in Spain for the bride who embraces her own individuality.

25th Anniversary at the Pasarela Gaudí Novias
Today is a very special day for us. As every year, we are at Barcelona Bridal Week where we present our new collection of bridal gowns. However, this morning the fashion show at the Pasarela Gaudí Novias has been more emotional and significant than ever, because through it we have celebrated our 25 years dressing brides.
“Seams” is the name of our new collection for 2014, and through it we wish to pay homage to Haute Couture, its tradition and its history, as the foundations of the work carried out day after day in our company workshops. “Seams” are also the delicate stitches which make up each dress and are delicately sewed by our seamstresses onto the patterns that are created by the designers and later cut out by our cutters.
To mark this anniversary, we want to showcase the work of the team and thank them for their meticulous hard work. Just like the petites mains of the Parisian workshops, they know the secret of creating a unique dress and show great skill and impeccable standards in each creation.
The show has been open with a mock-up; a mysterious toile that is gradually transformed into a unique dress striving for perfection. An aspiration we have shared for 25 years.
